"What is
Paper Racism?"
= the societal preference for white paper made from cutting down trees
When I was 13, I coined the term paper racism, not out of a deep understanding of racial injustice, but because I felt that favouring white paper over more sustainable options, simply because it was white, was highly irrational.
Back then, I didn’t fully understand the complexity of racism. I just knew that judging something purely by its colour, even something as commonplace as paper, was wrong.
Now, I recognize that racism is a deeply rooted and painful injustice that extends far beyond the this metaphor. However, the idea behind "paper racism" still holds: our biases, even the smallest ones, can have significant consequences.
I am currently conducting research regarding how cognitive biases could be contributing to paper racism. Default bias, our natural tendency to choose the default option without actively considering if it's the best option, is one likely culprit. Fortunately, WE have the power to determine our 'default option'.
For our planet and ourselves, let’s make eco-friendly our new default.
What we do
We cool the Earth, one page at a time.
We eradicate 'Paper Racism'.
In fact, white is not the only colour of paper, and wood is not the only material for paper. There are many sustainable alternatives to wood pulp paper, such as sugarcane paper, which has the colour of your breakfast oatmeal!
We make use of existing waste materials.
Sugarcane paper is made from bagasse (waste generated from sugar production). For every 10 tons of sugar produced, 3 tons of bagasse are produced.
We save trees.
Sugarcane paper contains 0% wood pulp. Four A4 paper boxes produced using sugarcane equals one mature tree preserved.
We help mitigate climate change.
By preserving trees, which absorb CO2, we help reduce global warming.
We share our ideas with people like you.
As change requires collective action, we aid institutions and individuals in their transitions from wood pulp paper to sustainable sugarcane paper.

Lost per DAY due to deforestation
Amounts to about 50,000 species per year
257,000 km^2

This is more than the entire UK

While it is easy to feel extremely hopeless about the state of the Earth, if we sit here and believe that “nothing will change”, NOTHING WILL CHANGE.
We have to make the change.
42,000,000 trees are cut down per DAY, but we CAN decrease that number.
Wherever in the world you are, you can buy sugarcane paper with a simple click on the internet. Share this website with your friends so that they can do the same.
If you don't want to...
AT LEAST GO OUTSIDE AND PLANT A CUTE LITTLE TREE! :)
